Que 1. Ravi Prasad, a farmer has 25 acres of land. He noticed some infection on the leaves of his crops. He called his friend Raghav, who advised him to use DDT. However, Ravi Prasad preferred to use dry powder of neem leaves as an insecticide.
Answer the following questions based on the above information:

Ans. (i) Neem powder is a natural disinfectant whereas DDT is a chemical disinfectant and has harmful effects when it enters the body of any living being.
(ii) Yes because neem leaves are not harmful in any way.
(iii) Environmental concern and empathy.
Que 2. Adulteration is becoming a very serious problem of our society. Study reveals that more people die because of food adulteration rather than hunger. Shopkeepers mix harmful chemicals and things in food items to earn more profit which may even lead to deaths.
Answer the following questions based on the above information:
(i) Being a responsible citizen how can you fight against adulteration?
(ii) Give an example of a food adulterant. How can it be tested?
(iii) How can Government curb adulteration?
Ans. (i) By sensitising people about adulteration.
(ii) Small amount of pebbles/impurities are mixed in pulses. When the pulses are washed the impurities float on the water.
(iii) Government can put a strict ban on adulteration; cancel the licenses of the shopkeepers selling adultered foods.
Que 3. Nectar, a sweet viscous liquid secreted by flowers, is sucked by bees and converted to honey by the action of an enzyme. It is then stored in special cells of hives. This honey is of enormous use to man. Keeping this in mind, bee keeping has become an important agricultural enterprise.
